  1. Berg, Alban 1885-1935. Austrian composer. He
  2. studied under Schoenberg and was associated
  3. with him as one of the leaders of the serial,
  4. or 12-tone, school of composition. His output
  5. includes orchestral, chamber, and vocal music
  6. as well as two operas, Wozzeck 1925, a grim
  7. story of working-class life, and the
  8. unfinished Lulu 1929-35. His music is
  9. emotionally expressive, and sometimes
  10. anguished, but can also be lyrical, as in the
  11. Violin Concerto 1935.
