Berg, Alban 1885-1935. Austrian composer. He
studied under Schoenberg and was associated
with him as one of the leaders of the serial,
or 12-tone, school of composition. His output
includes orchestral, chamber, and vocal music
as well as two operas, Wozzeck 1925, a grim
story of working-class life, and the
unfinished Lulu 1929-35. His music is
emotionally expressive, and sometimes
anguished, but can also be lyrical, as in the
Violin Concerto 1935.
